The Library Foundation
The mission of The Library Foundation Inc. is to enrich publicly-funded library services by raising private funds to enhance collections, resources and facilities at Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library. We do this through development of annual giving and legacy programs, along with securing special gifts and grants.
Technology has transformed library services, and there is an increased demand for information in the 21st century. In 2012, over 368,000 visitors came to Bismarck Public Library, people used public computers 237,000 times, reference librarians answered 30,000 questions, and 20,000 people attended Story Hours.
The Library Foundation was incorporated in 1976 to help expand library resources for the growing city. At first, every dollar raised was used for specific library needs-a Baldwin piano, rare books, children's programs. In the late 1990s, the Foundation helped complete the lower level of the building. By the year 2000, it was apparent that a larger pool of resources was needed, so an endowment fund was begun. It now stands at more than $1 million and provides annual support for the library. In addition in 2007, the Foundation helped to open a coffee shop in the library and in 2010 a $643,000 update to the children's library was completed.
By raising private funds, the Library Foundation helps ensure that persons of every circumstance have access to information and resources, adding to the quality of life in Bismarck.
